BYU Alma Mater - "College Song"
By Annie Pike Greenwood (1899) Prior to the beginning of the 2008 Football Season, Fred McInnis talked with me about his desire to bring more awareness and prominance to one of BYU's older school songs. Every Cougar fan knows "Rise and Shout." Not as many are aware that long before that became the sports anthem for BYU, a delightful and spirited school song was written by Annie Pike Greenwood (BS 1900) in response to the growing popularity of college songs across the country. Annie lived a fascinating life, and it was very interesting to read about her, and some of her writings. I prepared two arrangements for the BYU Cougar Marching Band - the first being a choral type arrangement that can be used at the end of football games - based on a old choir arrangement that Fred sent to me. I also prepared a fight song style arrangement, in case they decide to re-introduce the College Song into the "heat of the battle" during the games.
BYU Cougar Marching Band Fanfare
By Carl Stephen Hammer A Short fanfare prepared for the 2011 Brigham Young University Cougar Marching Band.
Caillou Theme
by Jeffrey C. Zahn (ASCAP) and Sara C. Zahn (ASCAP) In November of 2013, the Hollywood Christmas Parade contacted me about arranging the theme from the children's television show Caillou. They lined up the Beverly Hills High School Marching Band, under the direction of Bill Bradbury, to accompany the Caillou balloon in the 2013 edition of the parade. DHX Media (Toronto) Ltd. granted permission to arrange, and I quickly prepared a fun little arrangement for the parade.
Good Lovin'
By Rudy Clark & Arthur Resnick Stand Tune prepared for the 2006 Brigham Young University Cougar Marching Band.
Good Vibrations - Beach Boys
Brian Wilson & Mike Love I arranged Good Vibrations for Arwen Hernandez and the 2010 Pacific Palisades Charter High School Marching Band. I deliberately avoided doing a transcription - I wanted to give it a little more swing and stylize it for a marching band program.
Hail To Palisades
By Anonymous Arwen Hernandez approached me in the Fall of 2013 about working on the Palisades Charter High School Alma Mater. All they had was a recording of a vocalist singing the melody and lyrics. No composer and nothing else. I dictated the melody, added harmony and set it in an anthem style. I wrote it so that it could be performed by a full orchestra, concert band, marching band, choir or a combintation of all of the above.
Inside of Me
Tyler Castleton, Jenny Frogley, Abe Mills, Justin Smith, Bret Bryce and Dave Kimball Special Arrangment prepared for the 2005 Brigham Young University Cougar Marching Band to accompany Special Guest Artists Jericho Road.
Korobeiniki
Russian Folk Song Korobeiniki is a Russian folk song, which is also used as a popular Yiddish and Israeli folk song. It has been popularized by the video game Tetris, and Doctor Spin's novelty song, as well as various rock groups. I arranged this tune for the BYU Cougar Band for a video game half time show in 2008. I used the folk song version rather than the game version as my source material. I shortened it to fit the halftime drill needs of the ensemble. I set the tune in a Russian style.
Loyal, True and Brave (long version)
By Carl Stephen Hammer
This composition was prepared for the BYU Cougar Marching Band as the finale to their November 8th 2007 Patriotic Show. The title is taken from one line of text from the Battle Cry of Freedom - which is the primary tune used in this piece. I combined that tune with the Hymn of Thanksgiving and "the rocket's red glare" section of the Star Spangled Banner. The timing of the rocket section is meant to coincide with the unfurling of a 40 yard wide American Flag. This is the longer version which I wrote before I edited it to fit time constraints, and a need for simplicity due to the limited preparation time for the show.

One Night in Bankok (from Chess)
Benny Andersson, Tim Rice & Bjorn Ulvaeus I prepared this movement for the 2007 Santa Monica High School Viking Marching Band Scheherazade Show. Terry Sakow is the director. They originally planned to use it either as a warm up - leading without a break into the opener, or as the opener itself. Unfortunately, they found themselves too crunched for time to satisfactorilly prepare this movement. Permission to arrange Bangkok was obtained through the Hal Leonard Corporation.

Adventure on the High Seas (Pirates)
By Carl Stephen Hammer Commissioned by Dr. Abel Ramirez This original work for concert band takes its departure from the very popular marching band show written for Santa Monica High School in 2003. The work is in 4 movements. Although the work is based on the marching band music, it is not in a marching style, and re-imagines the work in a concert band setting. Movement 1 - The Jolly Roger Movement 2 - Swashbuckler Movement 3 - To Those In Peril Movement 4 - Mutiny!
Agony - from Into The Woods
By Stephen Sondheim Arranged for the Brigham Young University 2013 Homecoming Spectacular. The BYU Young Ambassadors requested that I adapt Agony from the 10 piece back up band arrangement to an arrangement for the full BYU Wind Symphony - under the direction of Dr. Don L. Peterson. Permission to arrange granted through Hal Leonard Corporation.
Aria: Der Holle Rache kocht in Meinem Herzen from Die Zauberflöte
The Queen of the Night from The Magic Flute By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Transcribed and Arranged by Carl Stephen Hammer Commissioned in Honor and Memory of Dr. Karl Swearingen - from Terry Sakow. In 2007, Dr. Karl Swearingen suddenly passed away. Terry Sakow, the band director at SAnta Monica High School, called to ask me to arrange this movement for trumpet solo and concert band. Before Karl's passing, he invited Terry to play this solo with the Golden State British Brass Band. Terry wanted to commission this work in his honor, to add it to the concert band repertoir. He asked me to capture the work as if Mozart had written it for a current concert band. Terry premiered this movement with the Santa Monica College Concert Band on Sunday, December 9, 2007, with Kevin McKeown conducting.
Blow!
By Carl Stephen Hammer
Taking it's thematic material from the traditional sea chanty Blow the Man Down, Blow! is a theme and variation in a swing style. It features plenty of soloistic elements, along with opportunities for different secitons to make statements. The work is challenging with its quick tempo, swing style, range and technical challenges.
Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful? from Cinderella
Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Arranged for the Brigham Young University 2013 Homecoming Spectacular. The BYU Young Ambassadors requested that I adapt Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful? from the 10 piece back up band arrangement to an arrangement for the full BYU Wind Symphony - under the direction of Dr. Don L. Peterson. Permission to arrange granted through Hal Leonard Corporation.
Don't Cry
By Leonardo Bafunno de Bernardini and Nathan Pacheco Nathan Pacheco served as the featured guest artist for the 2013 Brigham Young University Homecoming Spectacular. For the finale, the program team requested an arrangement of Nathan's song - Don't Cry. This arrangement included Nathan singing the lead, joined by BYU students Becca Pedersen (Metropolitan Opera Winner) and Taylor Morris (from the BYU Young Ambassadors). The BYU Wind Symphony and BYU Women's Chorus provided the accompaniment. The arrangement also included a curtain call and exit music - which I treated as variations of the song material - played by the Wind Symphony. Permission to arrange secured through Alfred Music and Hal Leonard Corporation.

I Got Rhythm
Music and Lyrics by GEORGE GERSHWIN and IRA GERSHWIN Prepared for the 2013 Brigham Young University Homecoming Spectacular! I worked closely with Colleen West, Associate Professor of Dance at BYU, to prepare a custom arrangement designed to accompany 24 tap dancers. The BYU Wind Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Don L. Peterson, provided the accompanyment. Having studied tap dance for many years as a youth, it was so much fun putting this together! It was great to coordinate the dance vision with the Wind Symphony - and throw in a little of my own creativity as well. Permission to arrange granted through Alfred Music.
Nessun Dorma from Turandot
Music: Giacomo Puccini & Franco Alfano Nathan Pacheco served as the featured guest artist for the 2013 Brigham Young University Homecoming Spectacular. The program team requested an arrangement of Nessun Dorma for Nathan, to be accompanied by the BYU Wind Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Don L. Peterson. This arrangement ended up being more of a transcription as I tried to stay immitate the original orchestral version as close as possible. Permission to arrange granted by Universal Music Careers and Casa Ricordi Srl
North By Northwest Overture (1959)
Bernard Herrmann (1911 - 1975) Transcribed and Arranged by Carl Stephen Hammer Prepared for Dr. Lawrence Stoffel and the California State Northridge Wind Ensemble. Permission to arrange secured through the Alfred Publishing Company. In January, 2008, Dr. Lawrence Stoffel visited with me about preparing a transcription of the Overture to Alfred Hitchcock's "North By Northwest." Permission to arrange was secured through the Alfred Publishing Company, and the transcription opened the "They Could've Been Contenders" concert on Saturday, May 3, 2008. The Northridge Wind Ensemble gave an outstanding performance!
Second Symphony for Organ & Band -Movement I - Guilmant
FĂ©lix-Alexandre Guilmant (1837 - 1911) I remember hearing Guilmant's Morceau Symhonique for trombone when I was in 8th grade - played by an older student in my band class. I think it was the first solo trombone piece that really inspired me to start practicing trombone solo literature. I decided to look up other works composed by Guilmant, and was struck by the first movement of his Second Symphony for Organ and Orchestra - arranged by Guilmant from an earlier solo organ piece. I thought it would work well for concert band and organ - so I transcribed and arranged it! The Brigham Young University Wind Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Donald Peterson, premiered the arrangement on Tuesday December 4 2012. I moved the key from A to Ab - a friendlier key for bands - which necessitated some adjustments to the organ part. I also added some percussion. Otherwise, it is primarily a transcription of the original.
The Long Silence Broke
The Long Silence Broke By Carl Stephen Hammer Dr. Don L. Peterson contacted me in December of 2008 about the possibility of preparing an arrangement of Book of Mormon hymns or songs for the May 2009 BYU Wind Symphony Tour of Japan and Korea. Of course, I was absolutely delighted and honored to do so. The tour hosts in Japan were especially interested in a medley that would honor the 100th anniversary of the translation and publication of the Book of Mormon into Japanese. There were many hymns and songs to choose from. With guidance from the hosts, we chose three that are known and loved by many in the church. We were graciously granted permission from the Intellectual Property Office of the church, and from the office of Janice Kapp Perry to use their music in the arrangement. The Long Silence Broke is a setting of three well-known Book of Mormon songs/hymns: Well Bring the World His Truth by Janice Kapp Perry, An Angel from on High by Parley P. Pratt (text) and John E. Tullidge (music), and Book of Mormon Stories by Elizabeth Fetzer Bates. The title is taken from Parley P. Pratts first line in An Angel from on High, and reflects a desire to honor the translation of the Book of Mormon into Japanese and by extension honors each translation that breaks the silence, removes the seals, and reveals the fullness of the gospel. The music begins with a reflective setting of the verse from Well Bring the World His Truth, with small suggestions of Asian and Native American styles woven into the music. Repetition of the thematic material builds to a joyous outburst restating a fragment of the verse. The mood suddenly shifts to a more adventurous style for An Angel from on High. My thoughts, as I read the text to this hymn, focused on Joseph Smiths conversations with Moroni, his visits to Cumorah, and the challenges, the opposition and the adventures he faced in his efforts to safely obtain the records, translate them, and keep them away from those who had other plans for the gold. The story can be just as exciting as any Indiana Jones adventure! The variations toggle between the triple and duple elements of the music, and make use of the answer/response elements built into the composition. The focus through much of the first part is on the triple elements, building tension to a resolution with the response of the duple concluding material. The concluding chord is broken by the violent entrance of the percussion announcing the Book of Mormon Stories material. This is perhaps the best known, and most loved Book of Mormon song in our church repertoire. The immediate appeal to children . . . Pulse and Rhythm! Also appealing are the open 5ths, the musical suggestion of Native American culture, and the connection to the stories of the Lamonites and the Nephites, and all their struggles and conflicts. The stories in the Book of Mormon are violent. The Opposition in All Things motif is established in the very first chapter, and the struggle (often graphic) continues throughout the entire book. This setting reflects the dissonance and tension that leaps from the pages. Although the Book of Mormon ends with a violent tragedy, the story is not complete. After the cacophony of the previous section, the music returns to a re-statement of Well Bring the World His Truth. This time, the music is transformed into a fervently majestic march. This final statement now includes not only the verse, but also the chorus. The images I had in my mind were of the many faithful families, and the young men and young women they send out into the world to be an army of missionaries breaking the long, long silence.
Virginia Tech Alma Mater
J. Sochinski I arranged this for the Brigham Young University Wind Symphony 2007 East Coast Tour. They performed on the Virginia Tech campus, and wanted to honor Virginia Tech by playing the Alma Mater.

A Gilbert and Sullivan Celebration (with piano duo)
For Choir with Piano Duo Sir William Schwenk Gilbert I prepared this arrangement for the the 2009 Brigham Young University Homecoming Spectacular. The ensemble combined the BYU Women's Chorus, the BYU Men's Chorus and the BYU Wind Symphony. After the Spectacular, I was asked to re-work the accompaniment for just choir and 2 pianos so that it could be performed for the choir winter concert. Selections include: Dance A Cachucha, Climbing Over Rocky Mountain, With Catlike Tread, Here's A How-De-Do!, Love Unrequited (Nightmare Song), Then One Of Us Will Be A Queen and When The Foeman Bares His Steel. Instrumentation: A Gilbert and Sullivan Celebration (with wind ensemble)

How Great Thou Art
Lyrics: Stuart K. Hine, b. 1899 While serving as a missionary in Denmark, I had the opportunity to meet with people who had many different belief systems. I was serving as a proselytizing messionary for my church, however, I made it a point to always approach members of other congregations and belief systems with an attitude of humbleness, and with a disposition to learn and grow when others shared their beliefs with me. I had many wonderful experiences with the good people of Denmark - both in and out of my own church. Because of my musical training I had many opportunities to serve as a musician for the church. I often accompanied others on the piano. I enjoyed visiting a Pentacostal congregation in Herning, and was inspired by the popular style of music they employed in their sevice - which was very different from my own church. I prepared this setting with a particular missionary in mind who was struggling with the demands of serving as a missionary, and with personal struggles in his own life. I had accompanied his singing on a number of occassions. Because we were transferred to different areas, I never did get the opportunity to share the arrangement with him. When I arrived home from my mission, I shared the arrangement with my family and members of my congregation. I received kind permission from the copyright holders, and had a number of opportunities to perform the music in church, and in private. The response was very enthusiastic. Many people commented that my setting brings the music to life, and gives meaning to the text in a way that is deeply moving and inspirational. Please contact me if you would like to use my arrangement. Permission must be obtained from the copyright holder to make additional copies - Manna Music, Inc. Instrumentation: In The Bleak Midwinter
Lyrics by Christina Rosetti I prepared this arrangement for vocal solo with piano accompaniment for the 2010 Christmas Season at church. We have a vocalist at church who sounds good both as a soprano or alto - so I made use of her range!

Angels We Have Heard On High - Mixed Ensemble
French Carol I serve as the music chair in our church - the Santa Monica Second Ward. One of my responsibilities is to coordinate music for our yearly Christmas Program. For the 2009 program, I prepared arrangements to include instrumentalists in our program - especially the youth. It was popular enough that it has found a place in other programs. I especially like to program it immediately after the congregation sings Hark the Herald Angels Sing - beginning right after the last notes release.
|
Joy to the World - Mixed Ensemble
Attributed to Georg Friderick Handel I volunteered to organize instrumentalists for our 2010 Stake Christmas Program. Again, I employed a motley assemblage of instrumentalists based on who was available to participate. This arrangement uses both organ and orchestra to accompany the congregation. Given the link to Handel, I included little interludes between the verses with snippets of The Messiah - as well as weaving similar material into the accompaniment of the verses.

Once In Royal David's City - Brass/Sax Ensemble

Violin Duet Opus 99 I Mvt 1
Franz Joseph Haydn I downloaded this public domain violin duet by Haydn for my daughter and I to play together. I found the downloaded copy difficult to read, so I edited it to make it more legible. I added a few bowings and fingerings for my own notes - there are probably better solutions. If you would like, please feel free to download the score and parts - they are in the public domain.

Are Sound Samples Available?
Yes, however, I only post samples on the website that are public domain, or my own compositions.
Do I need permission to perform or record your original compsitions or arrangements?
If you have already purchased my music or arrangements, you do not need additional permission to perform, record, or video for educational purposes - or for limited local fundraising efforts. I will be glad to provide a letter confirming permission for your performance venue or competition circuit - if required. Please contact me, however, if any performances, recordings or video will be used commercially.
Do I need permission to use your previous custom arrangements of copyrighted material?
Yes - copyright clearance must be secured from each print-right holder (usually the publisher) before I can release music.
When will you send me the score and parts?
As soon as copyright clearances are secured, I will e-mail the music.
How long does it take you to prepare an arrangement?
It depends on - how many projects I am currently working on, the length of the music you want prepared, whether or not is an arrangement or original material, and the nature of the music being prepared. Most of my customers, however, have been pleasantly surprised at how quickly I can deliver their music.
What about percussion parts for marching band?
I usually write complete percussion parts for most of my arrangements. I will write both battery and front ensemble parts - depending on the ensemble. You are welcome to alter the parts to match the educational needs of your students, and to meet programatic and general effect elements of your program. If the copyright to the music is held by someone else, the person altering the parts will need to be added as an arranger to the license.
|
What types of ensembles do you write for?
I write for band, orchestra, choir, small ensembles, soloists, etc.
Are your arrangements of music from the public domain copyrighted?
My specific arrangements are copyrighted - however the source material from the public domain is not.
What if there are errors, or I am not satisfied with the music you send me?
I do not send invoices until you approve the final draft. I consider everything else a rough draft - a work in progress - until you give me your approval to send the final copy.
How do you deliver the music?
I usually e-mail the score and parts. I usually send the score and parts as PDF's. Contact me for other delivery methods or formats.
What are your prices for arranging or composing music?
As a general guideline, I usually receive $200.00 per minute for a large ensemble arrangement or composition for a school group. For example - a marching band show is usually about 7 1/2 minutes, and I usually receive $1500.00 for a complete show. I understand, however, that most school budgets are tight, so please feel free to negotiate with me.
How do I pay for your work?
As a general rule, I do not bill until you are satisfied with my work. I do not require a deposit. Even though a couple of music teachers have taken advantage of me, and disappeared before paying me, I still prefer to make sure my customers are satisfied before I send an invoice. I accept check or money order.
